James Livingstone is an emerging contemporary artist and sculptor whose practice explores the relationship between landscape, environment, place and human intervention. Working across abstract painting and sculpture, his work is concerned with atmosphere, memory, colour and the traces that people leave behind.

Livingstone initially developed his practice through sculptural works constructed from laminated wood, metal and other mixed media. Drawing on the visual language of post-industrial environments, these works explored abandoned structures, Urban & industrial decay and the gradual return of nature to spaces shaped by human activity. His sculptures combine constructed geometric forms with weathered surfaces, oxidised metal, spray paint and layered materials, reflecting the tension between human industry and the natural environment.

In September 2026, James Livingstone was longlisted for ArtEvol 2026: A View from Everywhere, an international open-call exhibition organised by London Art Collective and presented at Saatchi Gallery, London. The exhibition brings together artists working across painting, sculpture and other disciplines, with the 2026 exhibition that took place in October.

He was also featured in the May 2026 Edition Of the contemporary NIKITINMAG publication dedicated to new & emerging artists.

Alongside his sculptural practice, Livingstone's work as an abstract painter has increasingly centered on landscape. Rather than depicting a place literally, his abstract landscape paintings seek to translate the experience of being there — the atmosphere of a landscape, its changing light, colours, seasons, textures and emotional character.

Livingstone works intuitively, reducing landscape into expressive colour, organic forms, gestural marks and geometric structures. Elements of trees, fields, water, architecture and the natural environment may remain within the work, but are transformed rather than directly represented. The resulting paintings occupy a space between landscape and abstraction, with an emphasis on atmosphere, movement and the emotional impression of place.
